Description

Entomobrya caputovisensis sp. nov.

(Figs 1F, 4D, 11 A–E)

Holotype. Female NSW, South Ramshead, - 31.5°S, 148.233°E, 1980m asl, moss, pitfall, Feb 2016, R. Slatyer leg. [SAMA 22641].

Paratypes. All the same locality, collector and date as holotype, two specimens on slide, 1 female, 1 male, [SAMA 22641–3]; 1 female on slide, [SAMA 22642–2]; nineteen specimens in ethyl alcohol, [SAMA 22642–3].

Description. Size. Length up to 1.4 mm excluding antennae (n=3).

Colour. Pattern as in Figs 1F and 4D, ground colour clear brownish with blue violet lateral band on all segments dorsally, near black at posterior of tergites Th III, Abd I–III with some whitish spots on anterior of Abd IV (Figs 1F, 4D).

Head. Antennal length 626 μm, 2.2 times the length of the head, Ant IV with a bilobed apical vesicle. Relative length of Ant I/II/III/IV=1.0/1.8/1.8/2.4. Four labral papillae spinulate or with some projections. External process of labial papilla E not reaching at the papilla tip. Labial chaetotaxy with MREL 1 L 2 ciliated chaetae, R 2/3 of M in length. Eight eyes, GH smaller than EF.

Thorax and abdomen. Length ratio of Abd IV/III=4 (n=3). Unguis with 4 teeth on internal edge: first pair at 60% distance from base of unguis, and 2 unpaired teeth, first one at 75% distance from the base and the most distal one minute. Dorsal tooth approximately at half distance between the base of unguis and internal pair of teeth. Trochanteral organ with 13 chaetae (Holotype). Unguiculus spike-like, with a smooth external edge on leg III, serrate on legs 2 and 3. Furcal length 635 μm (n=3). Manubrial plate with 4 chaetae and 2 psp. Mucro with 2 teeth, subapical tooth in size similar to the apical one. Mucronal spine present.

Macrochaetotaxy. Simplified formula: 3,1,0,3,2/3,4/2,3/1,0,1/0,0,2,3,2. Head chaetotaxy with H1 area with An 2, An 3a1 and An 3, as in Fig. 11A, H 2 area with A 5, S’ 0 Mc absent on area H3, H4 area with S 1, S 3 and S 4i Mc, H5 with Ps 2 and Ps 5. Thorax with Area T1 on Th II with 3 Mc (m 1, m 2, and m 2i present) (Fig. 11B). Area T2 on Th II with 4 Mc present (a 5, m 4, m 4p and m 4i). Abdomen with Area A1 on Abd II with 2 Mc as in Fig. 11C and area A2 on Abd II with 3Mc. Abd III with 1 Mc on areas A3 and A5, without Mc on area A4 as in Fig. 11D. Abd IV with 14 Mc on central area among bothriotricha (A 4 –A 6, Ae 5, and B 4 –B 6) (Fig 94). Sensillary chaetotaxy S=22/02273, microsensillary chaetotaxy Ms=10/1010.

Remarks. Only four Entomobrya have the chaetotaxy 2,3/1,0,1 on the tergum of Abd II and III: Entomobrya leonensis Jordana & Baquero, 2005 (Spain), Entomobrya nivalis Linnaeus, 1758 (Europe and USA); Entomobrya unostrigata Stach, 1930 (cosmopolitan) and Entomobrya salina sp. nov. All of them differ in not having 3,4 Mc on Th II as occurs in E. caputovisensis sp. nov.. Furthermore, E. unostrigata is also separated from the new species by the presence of 20 to 30 Mc on Abd IV and 1(2), 4 Mc in the areas T1 and T2 of the Th II. Entomobrya nivalis has a characteristic colour and chaetotaxy on Abd IV of 0,3,0,2,2, so different to the new species. Entomobrya leonensis is different by the presence of 4, 4 Mc on Th II and the chaetotaxy of the Abd IV as 0,3,2,2,2. E. salina sp. nov. has Abd IV polychaetose with 36 chaetae. These characters support the erection of this new species of Entomobrya.

Etymology. The species name is the Latinised version of the locality.
