Granulatocincta nataliae Harzhauser & Landau & Janssen 2022, nov. comb.

Description

Granulatocincta nataliae (Hoernes & Auinger, 1891) nov. comb.

Figs 17J 1 –J 3, 3W, 5, 6

Clavatula Nataliae —Hoernes 1891: 129 [nomen nudum].

* Pleurotoma (Clavatula) Nataliae nov. form.— Hoernes & Auinger 1891: 338, pl. 43, figs 1a–b.

Type material. Holotype: NHMW 1855 /0035/0021, Belgrade / Rakovica (Serbia), SL: 25.7 mm, MD: 10.1 mm, illustrated in Hoernes & Auinger (1891, pl. 43, figs 1a–b), figs 17J 1 –J 3, 3W.

Revised description. Shell medium-sized, solid, moderately broad fusiform with high spire composed of flat-sided whorls and weakly coeloconoid early teleoconch; apical angle ~35°. Protoconch not preserved. Earliest teleoconch whorls flat-sided with tripartite sculpture, three spiral cords of close-set beads enlarging abapically. On fourth whorl subsutural beads become coalescent, mid-whorl row well-defined, suprasutural beads become bifid by intercalation of narrow spiral groove. Pointed tubercles develop on subsutural collar; comma-shaped axial riblets at mid-whorl, with prominently beaded cord mid riblet, suprasutural beads weaken and become bifid by intercalation of narrow spiral groove. Suture narrowly impressed, linear. Last whorl 55% of total height. Subsutural collar moderately narrow, poorly delimited, bearing small pointed tubercles mid-collar, subsutural ramp at mid-width, with prominent row of beads placed mid-ramp. Shoulder delimited by broad, weakly beaded trifid cord, convex below, weakly constricted at base. Siphonal fasciole short, rounded, twisted with prominent growth increments. Sculpture of broad trifid shoulder cord, below seven weakly to moderately beaded cords of primary strength separated by narrow grooves, narrowing towards fasciole. Aperture moderately wide, pyriform. Outer lip not thickened, with six prominent lirae, extending deeply within aperture. Anal sinus moderately wide and deep, symmetrically U-shaped, with apex coinciding with central beaded cord. Siphonal canal short, straight. Columella strongly excavated in upper third, straight below, weakly twisted, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus moderately thickened, adherent, forming relatively broad callus rim.

Discussion. Granulatocincta nataliae (Hoernes & Auinger, 1891) is characterized by its sculpture of pointed tubercles on the subsutural collar, relatively regular beaded cords on the last whorl, and most importantly the prominent central beaded cord. Early teleoconch sculpture and general sculpture type are reminiscent of Granulatocincta callim nov. sp., but G. callim differs in its comparatively blunt beads, the buccinoid outline and the absence of lirae inside the outer lip. We are not aware of any other comparable species.

Paleoenvironment. Inner neritic with sea grass meadows (Jovanović et al. 2020).

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (middle Miocene): Pannonian Basin: Belgrade /Rakovica (Serbia) (Hoernes & Auinger 1891).
