Description

Capillogryllus yuani sp. nov.

Chinese name: Ṙ氏毛DZ

Figs. 2–4, 5 G–H

Material examined. Holotype. China: Male, Yadong County, Xizang, 7-ix-2023, Tao Zhang coll. (SNNU).

Paratypes. 1 male and 5 females, Yadong County, Xizang, 7-ix-2023, Tao Zhang coll. (SNNU).

Etymology. The name refers to the surname of Prof. Yuan, Feng, Northwest A&F University, in celebration of his 90th birthday next year and honor of his contributions to entomological taxonomy.

Description. Male. Body size small for Gryllinae. Head broader, almost as wide as the pronotum. Occiput protruding, vertex slightly inclined. Frontal rostrum slightly wider than antennal scape; antennal scape rounded and shield-like. Frons transversely broad. Median ocellus nearly round, distinctly smaller than lateral ones; lateral ocelli rounded. Postclypeus narrowly banded, slightly wider on sides; anteclypeus round shield-shaped. Labrum scutellate. The end section of the maxillary palpus axe-like, distinctly longer than the third segment. The pronotum nearly rectangular in dorsal aspect, sparsely pilose, the anterior margin slightly concave, and the posterior margin straight. Abdominal terga densely pilose. Tympanum absent. Legs bearing short and long setae. Dorsal spurs of hind tibia numbered 3: 3 (inner: outer). Apical spurs numbered three on both sides, the middle one the longest of the outer apical spurs, and the ventral one the shortest of the inner ones. Super-anal plate trapezoidal, subgenital plate triangular.

Male genitalia. In the dorsal view, the epiphallus nearly H-shaped, lateral lobe apically narrow and inwardcurved. Laterally viewed, the base of the epiphallus distinctly wider than its hooked apex. Ectoparamere finger-like in ventral view.

Female. Similar to male, but slightly larger. The terminal phalange (TP) sharp, the dorsal valves (dv) slightly wider, and the internal ventral process (IVP) with a finger-like projection. The ventral valves (vv) significantly shorter than the dorsal valves (dv).

Coloration. Body black. Maxillary palpi black. Posterior femora ornamented with black stripes. Posterior margin of pronotum and abdominal tergum in females possessing yellowish brown markings. Ovipositor yellowishbrown.

Measurements. Male (n=2). BL 7.97–9.61, HL 1.10–1.53, HW 2.58–2.74, PL 1.80–1.94, PW 2.53–2.78, HFL 6.15–6.79. Female (n=5). BL9.60–9.90, HL 1.49–1.76 HW 2.65–2.67, PL 1.99–2.07, PW 2.85–2.89, HFL 6.47– 6.61, OL 5.48–5.72.

Remarks. The species is similar to C. spinae in external morphology, but the legs of it are darker and the female abdominal terga have obvious yellow-brown markings. The male external genitalia of them differ distinctly. In dorsal view, the end of lateral lobes of C. yuani sp. nov. is concave, and C. spinae is straighter. In lateral view, the base of the epiphallus of C. yuani sp. nov. is distinctly wider than the end, while the end of the epiphallus of C. spinae is slightly wider than the base. In ventral view, the ectoparamere of C. yuani sp. nov. does not form a stinglike protrusion.
