Çok eski zamanlardan beri dünyada salgınlar sebep olan sığır vebası (veba-i bakari), özellikle 18. ve 19. yüzyıllarda Avrupa'da ve Osmanlı'da etkili olmaya başlamış ve milyonlarca hayvanın ölümüne yol açmıştır. Osmanlı Devleti bu durum üzerine İstanbul'da Bakteriyojihane-i baytari'deki bilim adamlarını görevlendirmiş, bu ekip tarafından 1902 yılında sığır vebası etkenin virüs olduğu belirlenmiş ve tedavisinde kullanılan serumu dünyada ilk defa keşfedilmiştir. Sadece İstanbul'da Bakteriyolojihane-i Baytari'de üretilen sığır vebası serum ihtiyacının Osmanlı'da karşılanamaması üzerine ikinci bir serum üretim merkezi olarak 1911 Ağustos ayında Erzincan Serum Darülistihzarı (Aşı ve Serum Müessesesi) hizmete başlamıştır. Bu müessese bir enstitü gibi hizmet vermiştir. Türkiye'de modern bilim çalışmalarının öncülerinden biri olmuştur. 1939 Erzincan Depremi'ne kadar hizmet etmiştir. Bu makalede, Anadolu'da ilk olarak açılan aşı ve serum üretim enstitüsü Erzincan Darülistihzar'ının kuruluş amacı ve yaptığı hizmetler anlatılmaktadır.
Abstract (English)
Rinderpest (veba-i bakari), which has been causing epidemics in the world since ancient times, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries began to be effective in Europe and the Ottoman Empire, and caused the death of millions of animals. Upon this situation, the Ottoman Empire appointed scientists at the Bacteriology Department in Istanbul, and in 1902, this team determined that the causative agent of rinderpest was a virus, and the serum used in its treatment was discovered for the first time in the world. Erzincan Serum Darülistihzarı (Vaccine and Serum Institute) started to serve as a second serum production center in August 1911, after the need for rinderpest serum, which was produced only in the Bakteriyolojihane-i baytari (veterinary bacteriology institute) in Istanbul in the Ottoman Empire, could not be met. It became one of the pioneers in modern scientific studies in Turkey. It served until the 1939 Erzincan Earthquake. In this article, wanted to explain the purpose of the establishment and the services provided by Erzincan Darülistihzar, the first vaccine and serum production institute opened in Anatolia.
