Abstract: The ubiquity of social media and the ease of mobile Internet connection have provided individuals an effective medium for self-presentation. This article discusses the phenomenon of taking selfies at disaster locations and uploading them to social media for self-imaging and preservation. This phenomenon has led to protests and ethical concerns. The research investigates the selfie-takers’ perception and fantasies about taking selfies at disaster locations. Data are gathered from purposive sampling and in-depth interviews with four respondents who had taken selfies or were photographed at disaster locations. Secondary data are pictures belonging to the respondents. Baudrillard’s theories of simulacrum and hyperreality and Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding theory are used to analyze the data. The results show that individuals taking selfies at disaster locations have their own fantasy, and do not represent their self-identity.
