Abstract

The base of vegetable pomade, which is used widely in Japan as hair dressing, is a mixture of castor oil and Japan wax. This mixture is reported to be a solid solution having a net work structure and exhibit specific rheological properties, but more details about these subject's are not well known.
We have found the relationship between the physical properties of the system, transparency, hardness, consistency, spreadability, thixotropic nature, smoothness and homogenity, and the structure of the system. The tools used in this observation are optical transmission measurement, viscometric measurement, differential thermal analysis, and microscopic observation.
Results:-
(1) Stability of the system is depend upon the rate of cooling, degree of supercool, and annealing technigue during the solidifying process of the system.
(2) Hardness of the system is directly determind by the glyceride composition of the system. But cousistency, spreadability and thixotropri nature depend upon the content of glyceride of di-basic fatty acid in Japan wax.
(3) The crystal form of Japan wax deeply in influence the properties of the system.
(4) Japan_??_wax contains bimolecular glyceride of di-basic fatty acid.
(5) Temperature hysreresis during storage greatly affects the transparency, hardness, consistency, spreadability, smoothness and homogenity of the system.
(6) The structure of the system is a net work, smooth and homogeneous, but turns to heterogeneous system by the polymorphismic transition of glycerids.
