Abstract:

At Karlsruhe's bioliq-project, dried straw is flash pyrolysed and turned to pyrolysis condensates and char. Due to the high water content of about 80%, the higher heating value (HHV) of the aqueous phase of the pyrolysis condensates is very low and can only be measured with a large margin of inaccuracy using bomb calorimetry. Therefore, two alternative experimental approaches are tested and compared. For the first approach COD, TOC and KF were measured, for the second one, elemental analysis and KF are used. In both, HHV is calculated from the measurement results obtained by the Channiwala equation. In order to compare the different experimental methods, multiple model liquids are prepared so that a theoretical HHV can be calculated over the initial weight. The theoretical value is calculated in two different ways. In the instance of using the molecular formula, this can be directly calculated from the weights. This molecular formula is inserted into the Channiwala equation. In the other instance, the values for the methods COD, TOC and KF must first be identified and then subsequently calculated like the experimental determination of the calorific value through the Channiwala equation. This research shows that the calorific value of the model liquids stays between 2.4 MJ/kg and 3.2 MJ/kg, the calorific value of aqueous pyrolysis condensates between 4.1 MJ/kg and 5.3 MJ/kg.
