Abstract:

Straw provides a readily available, home grown, source that can help the UK meet its target for renewable energy under the Renewable Energy Directive. However, there are competing uses for straw in the UK, coupled with only about half of the straw grown entering the market. This paper considers the amount of straw grown, the different uses and the economic factors that affect the decision of whether to chop or to bale.
