Abstract:

The grain from winter rye, winter triticale, winter wheat is a good raw material for bioethanol production in Latvia. The aim of study: to evaluate the growing technology of winter cereals and the suitability for bio-ethanol production. The trials were carried out in 2005, 2007, and 2008. Two to four varieties with different quality characteristics were selected from each cereals species. The greatest starch content and ethanol outcome were found to be for winter wheat, however the greatest ethanol content from the theoretical result (calculated from the starch data) was for winter rye. When we increased nitrogen fertilizer rate, the ethanol theoretical outcome for winter rye and winter triticale decreased. The weather annual conditions and selected variety affected the yield and quality parameters of the winter cereal.
