Summary

As part of the Coastal Sediment Availability and Flux Project, scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center conducted a nearshore geophysical survey to map the shoreface of Rockaway, New York (NY) between September and October of 2019. The objective of the project is to improve the understanding of barrier island geomorphic evolution and the sediment fluxes that drive that evolution over geologic and historic time scales. Collecting geophysical data can help researchers to identify relationships between the geologic history of the peninsula, its present-day morphology, and sediment distribution. High-resolution geophysical data collected along this peninsula can further the analyses and geomorphological interpretations of this and other coastal systems, improving researchers understanding of coastal response and evolution.

This data release serves as an archive of subbottom profile and navigation data collected September 27–October 5, 2019, offshore of the Rockaway Peninsula, NY, during USGS Field Activity Number 2019-333-FA. Data products, including chirp subbottom profile data and images, survey trackline map, location data with formal Federal Geographic Data Committee metadata, and field logs are provided. Preliminary geologic interpretations of the subbottom profiles and maps of the shoreface and Holocene sediment thickness are provided in Wei and others (2021). Coastal bathymetry and backscatter data were also collected during this geophysical survey and are provided in another data release (Stalk and others, 2020).
