Summary

This digital dataset release of the Tectonic Map of the Colorado Plateau is a courtesy publication of the previously published legacy report by V.C. Kelley in 1955. The original publication, "Tectonic Map of the Colorado Plateau Showing Uranium Deposits" contains elevation contours from the top of the Chinle formation in 1000 ft intervals and geologic structural formations such as monoclinal, synclinal, and anticlinal structures. The digitizing of this map is to provide a more accessible dataset to be available for public usage. The original dataset was in relation to a larger project by the University of New Mexico and their publications in geology of uranium distributions throughout the Colorado Plateau (Kelley, V.C., 1955, Regional [...]

Purpose

This digital dataset results from goal within the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program to convert surficial data that were previously published in non-digital format to digital, vector-based data suitable for use by the public and in USGS studies. The objective of the data conversion is to reproduce the original published mapping with little to no added interpretation. This digital dataset was created as part of U.S. Geological Survey efforts to inventory, catalog, and release structural and geologic data in geospatial form as part of a broad directive to develop 2D and 3D geologic information at detailed, national, and continental scales. These data products, derived from previous USGS and other studies, provide a fundamental starting point. The intended uses of this dataset include, but are not limited to, natural resource modeling, mapping, and visualization.
