Summary

There is a growing demand for commodities (elements, compounds, minerals) used in today's advanced technologies. Critical minerals are usually found in ore deposits that are deemed vital to economic and national security. The National Geochemical Database on Ore Deposits: Legacy data (NGDOD) contains chemistry and geologic information for nearly 30,000 historic ore and ore-related rock samples from mineral deposits and mining districts in the United States. Geochemical data sets from various mineral deposits were submitted by geologists of the "Systems Approach to Critical Minerals Inventory, Research, and Assessment" (SACM) within the U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Resource Program (MRP). Purpose

The National Geochemical Database on Ore Deposits is a tool used in the study of mineral systems and their deposit types as an approach to research and evaluate critical minerals inventories, and to assess the critical mineral potential of previously mined U.S. ore deposits and associated mining districts. This database is a featured part of the MRP SACM Project that is responsible for inventory, updated deposit and system models, and resource assessments of both major commodities and critical minerals that may be produced as principal-, co- or by-products. These data will also create research opportunities for exploring the processes that enrich these elements in ore systems and to assist leading ore system experts to update models so that they include critical minerals for future mineral assessments.
