Studies on the attitudes toward animals are important for improving animal welfare. However, previous studies were limited in terms of the attitudes toward specific species and purposes of animal using, i.e., ways we interact with animals for our own benefit. In order to examine the details of the attitudes toward animals, this study subdivided species and purposes of using, and analyzed the influence of individual factors on attitudes. Using the data from 900 adult Japanese, we analyzed the impacts of gender, interest in animal welfare, pet-keeping and ethical ideology as individual factors on attitudes toward ten species, such as dog and dolphin, and seven purposes of using, such as medical experiment and keeping as a pet. The results showed that all factors mentioned above affected the attitudes. Interest in animal welfare and ethical ideology influenced the attitudes in a wide range of species and the purposes of using. However, there were only a few significant differences between men and women in the treatments on keeping animals in zoos and at home; the women were more reluctant to use animals. In addition, there were significant differences between pet-keepers and non-keepers only in the use related to keeping animals and animal experiments; the pet-keepers were more positive toward keeping animals but more negative toward animal experiments. This study showed that relationships between the individual factors and the attitudes toward animals were consistent with the findings of the previous studies. However, image of species may have partly affected the attitudes toward animals.
