Abstract

RESUMEN

La maternidad constituye uno de los ejes de estudio centrales desde una perspectiva de género. De hecho, históricamente este asunto ha dado cabida a diferentes planteamientos teóricos y debates sociales dicotómicos, que se han ido desarrollando, tal y como plantea Moreno (2009), en torno a cuatro cuestiones fundamentales: la identificación entre identidad femenina y maternidad; la idealización de la maternidad y la presencia de estereotipos sobre la “buena” y “mala madre”; y la existencia o no del instinto maternal. De igual forma, la lactancia materna también ha generado diferentes posturas teóricas dicotómicas que se podrían incluir en estas cuatro cuestiones planteadas.

Nuestra postura teórica aboga por entender la maternidad y la lactancia materna como un proceso biopsicosocial y heterogéneo, que da lugar a una pluralidad y diversidad de experiencias y sentimientos ambivalentes en las mujeres. Un proceso que debería desmitificarse socialmente, no ser idealizado sino respetado por ser una decisión materna tomada tras tener un apoyo adecuado e información suficiente según las circunstancias individuales de cada madre o mujer (Pérez y Moreno, 2017). En este escrito se pretende realizar una revisión histórica y sociocultural de los distintos debates y las diferentes representaciones sociales existentes sobre la lactancia materna, desgranando cada una de las posturas dicotómicas en las que han ido situándose diferentes autores y autoras sobre dicha temática. Se repasarán aquellas ideas teóricas que presentan la lactancia materna como un hecho biológico frente a las que lo esbozan como un hecho cultural y se expondrán los argumentos utilizados para considerar el amamantamiento como socialmente más valorado que la lactancia artificial o las representaciones que asocian a la mujer que da el pecho a su/s criatura/s con el estereotipo de la “buena madre”.

ABSTRACT

Motherhood constitutes one of the central axes of study from a gender perspective. In fact, historically, this issue has given rise to different theoretical approaches and dichotomous social debates, which have developed, as Moreno (2009) states, around four fundamental issues: the identification between female identity and motherhood; the idealization of motherhood and the presence of stereotypes about the "good" and "bad mother"; and the existence or not of the maternal instinct. Similarly, breastfeeding has also generated different dichotomous theoretical positions that could be included in these four questions.

Our theoretical position advocates understanding motherhood and breastfeeding as a biopsychosocial and heterogeneous process, which gives rise to a plurality and diversity of ambivalent experiences and feelings in women. A process that should be socially demystified, not idealized but respected for being a maternal decision made after having adequate support and sufficient information according to the individual circumstances of each mother or woman (Pérez and Moreno, 2017). The aim of this paper is to carry out a historical and sociocultural review of the different debates and the different existing social representations on breastfeeding, unraveling each of the dichotomous positions in which different authors and authors on this topic have been placed. We will review those theoretical ideas that present breastfeeding as a biological fact versus those that outline it as a cultural fact and we will expose the arguments used to consider breastfeeding as socially more valued than artificial breastfeeding or the representations that associate the woman who breastfeeds her child/children with the stereotype of the "good mother".
