ABSTRACT

Using narrative analysis, this chapter aims to understand the roles our participants talk about playing in the drugs economy, their motives for selling drugs and the challenges they face as users and dealers. Participants in this study talked about the roles they played in the drugs economy, the inherent challenges to dealing whilst a heroin user and how they managed those challenges. Respondents showed how they understand their own motivations to deal as well as the ends achieved through these activities. This chapter is based on 31 semi-structured interviews, with 23 of those conducted between November 2011 and May 2012 as part of a PhD study and a further eight conducted in the summer of 2018.
