ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the background and contexts of music therapy in the 21st century. It begins with an introduction to the profession and discipline and examines some important developments since the first edition of the handbook in 2002. The contemporary public face and some external perceptions of music therapy are described initially, and this moves towards some foundational principles from within the profession. A brief history of music therapy is outlined and a current range of practices presented. Some definitions of music therapy are updated, and contemporary terminology is then explored. The remainder of the chapter is dedicated to a presentation and discussion of core values and principles identified for practice by the authors, emerging from our interviewees’ inspiring words in Chapter 1. The six areas outlined include musical play, safety and ethics, flexible practice, reflective and self-reflexive practice, collaborative practice and contextual awareness. The writing is selective and limited but is intended to point readers towards the depth and breadth of practice and scholarship in the music therapy field and to encourage further exploration.
