ABSTRACT

Decades of self-regulated learning research has shown that, in order to succeed in solo and collaborative learning tasks, students need to develop regulating learning skills and strategies on their own, with peers, and in groups. In this chapter, we introduce the three forms of regulation (self-regulation, co-regulation, and shared-regulation) and discuss their contribution to the learning sciences. We explain the critical processes in regulation and elaborate what is and what is not regulated learning. Finally, we point out to the design principles and technologies to support regulated learning.
