ABSTRACT

Folk rock represents a global cultural phenomenon that has gained importance since the 1960s in a European-wide context. This chapter investigates the combination of folk music with rock sound worlds and how this hybrid is expressed in selected folk rock groups and artists from Northern European regions. In other words, the purpose here is to discuss the global musical phenomenon ‘folk rock’ and how it has been shaped and distributed within the Nordic countries. Many localized variants, characterized by national and regional cultural expressions, have come to emerge through this process of hybridization. Consequently, this gives rise to broader issues of Nordic identity: is there something distinctive about the folk rock music from the Nordic area?
