ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we discuss the nature of reading comprehension and argue that it is an essential component of teaching reading from the earliest stages of children’s learning. Reading comprehension is part of the holistic understanding of reading, which includes motivation for reading and the development of children’s understanding of letters and phonemes.
