ABSTRACT

The primary aim for a physical educator is to find developmentally appropriate ways to ensure these children and adolescents engage with, rather than avoid, physical activity opportunities in an environment of respect, achievement, fun and confidence. This can be achieved by assessing the individual needs of the student with DCD, then providing differing levels of support and challenge, by identifying and building on their strengths, and learning styles and thereby maximising success. Key pedagogical strategies are framed within motor learning and control theory. Diagnostic task analysis, developmental considerations, task specific instruction, teaching styles, and a variety of relevant curriculum approaches are described and practical examples provided for teaching a student with DCD.
