ABSTRACT

Brazil and Africa share long historical links that dates back to the 16th century. Today, Africa is an unquestionable priority for Brazil’. When the Brazilian president delivered these words at a meeting with the African Ambassadors in Brazil on 25 May 2007, he actually meant it. In the first decade of the new millennium, the ascent of Brazil as an ‘emerging power’ injected the enthusiasm the country needed to expand her international presence. As a result, Brazil’s engagement with Africa increased exponentially and on several fronts, under the so-called South-South diplomacy. This chapter provides an account of Brazil’s approach towards Africa in the 21st century. It discusses EU-Brazil relations, with emphasis on the 2007 Strategic Partnership, and then explores Brazil-EU-Africa trilateral cooperation as established throughout the 2000s. The chapter concludes by examining major outcomes of these endeavours and offering insights on the prospects of Brazil-EU-Africa relations.
