ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a psychodynamic account on the disruption of the psychosomatic balance, and asks, whether this is psychopathology. In her chapter, Haguit Ehrenfreund aims to theorize the disturbance of the psychosomatic balance as a disorder of the body–mind relation. With clinical illustrations of patients with eating disorders, she demonstrates the power of transition via the body and its movement and sensations to the thinking processes. The chapter conceptualizes dance-movement psychotherapy as a psychosomatic treatment practice, using psychoanalytical theory of mental disorders. Finally, a technique for working towards body-mind awareness, in order to exemplify its therapeutic use is presented.
