ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes an integrative approach to vocabulary knowledge assessment that involves elements of traditional classroom-based assessment, performance descriptors, and corpus-based tools. It introduces some basic concepts regarding the dimensions to be considered for testing, classic vocabulary tests and examples of basic computer-based assessment. The chapter presents the most well-known proficiency guidelines regarding vocabulary testing; namely, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the ACTFL Performance Descriptors. It then discusses how lexis cannot be considered as separate from grammar and how learner corpora can facilitate assessing proficiency. In addition to the breakdown of the components of vocabulary knowledge, Meara has suggested that the following three dimensions may account for the overall vocabulary competence: size; organization; and accessibility. The chapter examines three main examples of vocabulary assessment tools used to measure some aspects of vocabulary knowledge: Yes/no tests, vocabulary profiles, and depth of knowledge.
