ABSTRACT

Replacement of unsatisfactory accommodation is only one of the factors contributing to the numbers requiring places in residential accommodation. This chapter shows some of the other influences: the effect on demand of making new provision; the respective roles of hospital and local authority in providing beds or places; and the unclear impact of increased and improved domiciliary services and sheltered housing. It concludes with a commentary on the overall effect of these various charges on the age and infirmity of residents and would-be residents.
