ABSTRACT
Narrative inquiry is a research design frequently used to study human occupations. In this chapter, the authors describe how narrative inquiry and occupation can be philosophically underpinned with Deweyan pragmatism; and how narrative inquiry is suited to understanding occupations, the situational elements that frame their performance, and the transformative capacity of occupations. The authors give practical tips for research methods and how rigor can be established by applying certain quality criteria. Throughout the chapter, the authors draw on the doctoral study of the first author, Jens, with the other authors as his supervisors. Narrative inquiry was applied in order to explore experiences of meaningful occupations of transgender men during their gender transition process.
