ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the sociocultural impact of the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) homecoming experience post-COVID-19. Unlike homecoming events at historically white institutions (HWIs), HBCU homecomings are typically planned as week-long festivals to celebrate the history and culture of Black excellence among current students, alumni, and community members. The legacy of these festival-like events extends beyond popular media and provides historical and cultural significance to generations of Black and African Americans. This chapter explores how students attending an HBCU in the Southeastern United States shared meaningful reflections about their HBCU homecoming experiences, which were enhanced by creating personal digital narratives in a community-based tourism course.
