ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on showing students examples of authentically used grammatical concepts. It explains that showing authentic examples to students gives them strong understandings of what it looks like to identify authentic, real-world examples of grammatical concepts they encounter in their out-of-school lives. The chapter begins by explaining what it means to show authentically used examples of grammatical concepts, providing information about the essential aspects and features of doing so. After that, it discusses why this practice is especially important to students’ experiences with inquiry-based grammar instruction before then sharing ways that it can look in action in the classroom. Following those explanations and examples, the chapter provides instructional recommendations to keep in mind when putting its key insights into action in the classroom and concludes with some closing takeaway points and a useful infographic.
