ABSTRACT

This chapter covers various aspects of homicides as it relates to Los Angeles County, California. Los Angeles County (L.A. County) is widely considered the most populous county in the United States with well over 9,800,000 residents in 2022. L.A. County includes 88 incorporated cities, 40 unincorporated communities, and 53 census designated places. The county encompasses 4,083 square miles and is home to about 25% of the state’s population. To be sure, the county experiences a fair number of homicides when compared to other regions of the United States. To better address the uniqueness of L.A. County, several aspects relating to homicides will be evaluated in this work: immigration and crime, homicide comparison of gang members, gang members: native-born versus non-native-born offenders, life expectancy, homicide clearance rates, violent offenders, media coverage of homicides, homicide and street gang densities, and media coverage of intimate partner homicide.
