ABSTRACT

Post-viral and post-epidemic mental health disorders are known to include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma or stress-related disorders, psychotic disorders, and others. Mental health disorders in Long COVID are likely a result of a combination of neurobiologic effects of the virus, both direct and indirect, along with psychosocial aspects of the disease. The approach to diagnostic assessment should consider subjective psychological complaints in concert with somatic symptoms. Treatment is guided by limited data in Covid-19, along with existing data on the treatment of comorbid psychiatric conditions in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and dysautonomias. Special considerations include the symptom profile of the patient, considered in the context of medication side-effects, along with potential end-organ dysfunction. Treatments for mental health conditions may include both psychopharmacological interventions and psychotherapeutic approaches.
