ABSTRACT
“Translation” is a multi-layered concept and a frequently used metaphor. This chapter introduces translation theory and gives examples of the questions that can be derived from its application to music and migration. Starting from the language-bound concept of translation and its textuality, the arc is drawn to cultural studies and translation as a social practice. Since translation processes in the context of music often take place between sign systems, other terms such as “interpretation,” “transcription,” and “adaptation” are also considered. Differentiated questioning is the most important methodological step in translation research within the field of music and migration.
