ABSTRACT

According to the most recent data from the World Prison Brief, approximately 11% of the global prison population is held in African prisons. Ten of the world's 50 largest prison systems are in Africa, including the two countries we profile from this region: Kenya, which has the 36th largest prison population globally, and South Africa, which has the 12th largest prison population. Between 2000 and 2021, the African region's prison population increased by 32.4%; the global prison population increased 24.3% during this period. Unfortunately, we cannot provide similar baseline data on either the size of Africa's community corrections population, or community corrections population trends for the countries in this region.
