ABSTRACT

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to using human intelligence in machines through technological innovations. AI is already widely diffused in different sectors to provide quality services. Recently, organizations worldwide have also started adopting different types of AI for a wide range of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices aimed at efficiently and effectively designing jobs; employing, training, and compensating people; and developing strategies to retain them. Nevertheless, little is known about the objectives and consequences of AI use for HRM. The existing literature is fragmented and rarely discusses actual AI applications.

This chapter aims to address such important literature gaps. Specifically, it builds on the established research on the use of technologies in HRM to present and discuss objectives/consequences of AI use throughout the HRM lifecycle. It creates a conceptual framework linking these two dimensions and presents existing knowledge and illustrative AI applications identified from the scholarly and socially curated literature, as well as among the existing vendor solutions of AI for HRM.

The chapter has a number of theoretical and practical implications. Overall, it contributes to creating more knowledge about AI for the HRM field. It can also inform the future design, implementation, and use of different types of AI for various HRM practices. Finally, it can also inspire and trigger more multi-practice, -level, and -stakeholder research, as well as enlighten policymakers about the potential implications of AI use in organizations.
