ABSTRACT

The in-depth introduction centers the research on Black children of incarcerated parents (BCOIP). The main purpose is to explain and fill the gaps in existing research and literature. Starting the section, we explore the question, what has been said about BCOIP? We discuss current and future research directions incorporating a critical race perspective and intersectional approach. This chapter will provide a background of the inspiration for this book, the research study “Children of Incarcerated Parents: Pathways to Resilience and Success.” It will highlight the importance of exploring the success and resilience of BCOIP. Continuing this section, editors define a social revolution by addressing the question, what is speaking truth to power? Concluding, the format of the book will be explained including the six themed parts of the lived experiences of the authors. As an edited collection, each chapter will speak directly to other BCOIP, researchers, and policymakers to enlighten, empower, and give rise to the unheard voices of this hidden population.
