ABSTRACT

On March 1, 2016, the Amber Railway Freight Corridor (“the Corridor”) was signed by the transportation departments of Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia (hereinafter “these four countries”), which was then submitted to the European Commission. On December 5, 2017, the “Memorandum of Cooperation on the Joint Construction of Amber Railway Freight Corridor” was jointly signed by these four transportation departments, indicating a formal initiation of the Corridor. The Corridor is constructed for both historic factors and for realistic consideration. Historically, just like the Silk Road, the Amber Road was an ancient trade channel for amber transportation, which links the south and north of the European continent to greatly promote commercial/trade intercourse in the European area. As part of the European railway freight network, the Corridor is the first new railway freight corridor after the completion of the original European railway freight network. The Corridor has great strategic significance in the development of these four countries and even Europe.
