ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the progress made in landscape education in the Middle East. Although the discipline is slowly being recognised in the region as independent from architecture, the professional scope continues to be predominantly of designed outdoor spaces and ‘beautification’. The chapter explores the challenges to education as it balances recognition of the regional landscape heritage with 21st-century global concerns for sustainable development. It reviews programmes offered in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Palestine. Far from a comprehensive survey, the aim is to provide the background and showcase the contribution of scholars to advance landscape architecture education in the Arab Middle East.
