ABSTRACT

This chapter guides the reader to key reference works and practice principles for assessing and managing violence risk in a service user with an acquired brain injury (ABI), whether incurred before or after birth. Using a complex case example but one representative of real-life referrals this chapter will illustrate critical considerations to ensure that risk assessments in those with ABI in forensic settings are robust and cognisant of the current literature. As a potentially critical risk factor anchoring violence risk assessment, certainly in commonly used SPJ assessment tools, personality and the presence of personality disorder can be assessed in several ways. Neuropsychological assessment helps inform future interventions as well as clinical and risk management by increasing the understanding of cognitive impairments and their impact on both clients presentations and their propensity to aggression and violence.
