ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 examines the many roles of the coach and highlights the multi-faceted nature of coaching. The role of the coach varies according to the level and context of the coaching programme. This chapter will provide clear alignment to context (e.g., stages from DMSP; participation and performance [and high performance]). Coaches should recognize that roles will change and understand the contextual factors that contribute to these changes.

It will also provide a cultural context - the role of the coach is culturally sensitive and varies according to the context and culture. From an applied perspective, the role of the coach will include many practical applications to coaching, for example, remembering the coach is the conduit between the coach, the participants, and the coaching session.
