ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the global research on high-impact teaching and learning approaches. In the first half of the chapter, we catalogue 40+ such approaches, segmented into strategies for starting a lesson, topic, or inquiry: surface learning, deep learning, transfer of learning, and cross-cutting approaches. We highlight that the effect size/student learning gains from each of these approaches is much higher than for many of the more expensive policy, structural, and accountability drivers discussed in the preceding chapters. However, we also highlight that there are considerable challenges with equipping teachers with the skills to effortlessly select and execute the right instructional approach at the right moment. Therefore, in the second half of the chapter, we explore strategies for pre-integrating these approaches – including scaffolding and fully scripted teaching strategies.
