ABSTRACT

Individuals who are LGBTQ+ are exposed to additional stressors. These stressors may be external or internal to the individual but can lead to mental ill-health. Resilience and high self-esteem can mitigate the effects of some of these stressors, although it is important to recognize that both constructs are not solely innate. Resilience and self-esteem are supported and enhanced through access to social support, positive relationships with others, positive school cultures, and policy contexts, which seek to protect individuals from discrimination. Schools and teachers play a critical role in developing resilience and self-esteem and building individuals’ capacities to cope with stressors as well as protecting them from stressors. Establishing a school culture which positively affirms all identities is a starting point in the right direction and will nurture the development of resilience and self-esteem.
