ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the new notion of lived democracy in relation to educational practices, acknowledging that politics is involved in education. It has been argued that current preparation for democracy is dysfunctional since it does not take place in a context of controversy and deliberation. We describe the two types of relationship between democracy and education. The final three sections explain the pedagogical value of disagreement, controversy and conflict, in relation to lived democracy as an ongoing constructional process for the common rules of life.
