ABSTRACT

Silvopastoral ecosystems in Tunisia have been suffering from inappropriate use and governance in the last few decades. Traditional management practices for regulating the access and use of these systems have disappeared, while new socio-economic and environmental challenges have appeared. The objective of this chapter is to describe the historical and current institutional dynamics and changes that have occurred in the pastoral areas in Tunisia during the last century. These changes have led to loss of customary land governance modes and the emergence of new ones. We analyze and discuss current governance failures and their historical causes and provide some policy recommendations.
