ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we link the emergence and early ontogeny of working memory to fundamental attention processes. With a focus on infancy and toddlerhood, we next describe some of the classic as well as more contemporary tasks used to examine working memory during the first 3 years. We also report developmental data on the individual infant and toddler tasks and briefly note endogenous and exogenous correlates of working memory performance. Finally, we recommend the next steps for examining working memory in early development.
