ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a ‘Centenary Initiative’ launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO) under the title The Future of Work; it is one of seven such initiatives introduced by ILO Director-General Guy Ryder in the run-up to the Organization’s 100th anniversary in 2019. It examines the relationship between the future of work and cooperatives in three stages: The trends of the future, the future of work and the future of work and cooperatives. The chapter describes the major trends affecting the world of work in the broad sense and an analysis of the impact of the changes on work, labour, employment and social dialogue. It focuses on the economic aspects of globalization, in particular trade, finance and the global division of labour, and its impact on the future of work. The chapter attempts to assess the impact of demographic, economic, technological and environmental trends on the world of work.
