ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces readers to the concept of challenging or maladaptive behavior vs. adaptive behaviors in children. The classification of maladaptive behaviors, externalizing and internalizing behaviors, are presented. The readers are introduced to the most enduring issues in the field related to the intervention of children with challenging behaviors and mental health issues in early childhood years. The framework of trauma-informed care and education is also discussed.
