ABSTRACT

The case studies in the book have provided insight into how nature is conceptualized and experienced by urban residents living in a diversity of geographical and cultural contexts around the world. This chapter through a reflective process attempts to draw out the prominent themes that emerged across the chapters. These have been consolidated into five themes, which include: 1) embeddedness of emotion in biocultural relationships; 2) colonial legacies and rupture of biocultural relationships; 3) migration in shaping and enriching biocultural realities; 4) harvesting nature and 5) a wide diversity of spaces are required and used. Each of these are discussed in relation to existing literature. The second half of the chapter considers conceptual points for advancing and using a biocultural diversity lens within urban studies. The chapter ends by providing a set of practical considerations to enhance the opportunities for more and deeper biocultural relationships in urban settings.
