ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the birth and development of GenerationPMTO over five decades. Initially conceptualized by Gerald R. Patterson and joined by his colleagues at the Oregon Social Learning Center, this set of evidence-based parenting programs serves families with children ages 2 to 18 in prevention and clinical populations. GenerationPMTO has undergone many changes over the years based on research and the need to adjust for differing contexts and cultures. Grounded in Coercion Theory and the Social Interaction Learning model, changes to the intervention have involved adding parenting tools and shaping intervention techniques and delivery formats for families and the community agencies that serve them. This chapter describes the evolution of the parenting program in terms of content, process, implementation, and fidelity monitoring; explores ways in which the model has expanded and been refined; and concludes with lessons learned.
