ABSTRACT

Theodore Roosevelt sought out Mark Hanna, a wealthy investor who managed William McKinley’s campaign, and offered the kind of dynamism that William McKinley lacked. William McKinley was elected the 25th President of the United States. Theodore Roosevelt complained about the lack of military planning and order and blamed the lack of preparedness on President William McKinley, who had assumed the role of Secretary of War, and Brigadier General William Rufus Shafter, who was Commander of the Fifth Corps, charged with defeating and removing Spanish military forces from Cuba. Theodore Roosevelt was proud of the manliness of his soldiers in life and in death. Roosevelt and the Rough Riders played an important role in the outcome of the Spanish–American War. Both the Republican Party and the Independent Party sought Roosevelt’s consent to nomination for Governor of New York.
