ABSTRACT

Asked why he robbed banks, Willie Sutton is said to have replied, ‘Because that’s where the money is’ (Cocheo 1997). His wisecrack was later elevated into a rule-of-thumb – Sutton’s Law – to guide physicians when making diagnoses: ‘Go first for the most likely explanation.’ Curiously there seems to be no equivalent Sutton’s Law in criminology, where one might most expect to find one.
