Abstract
Conventional ignition can be traced back to the early make and break systems used with the earliest petroleum fuel internal combustion engines. The major changes were the development of the magneto and the battery ignition system. The magneto used on current small engines is a highly developed volume production item. It has been combined with other essential portions of the engine to result in a low proportionate cost for the ignition function. There is every reason to believe that continued developments in materials and methods will allow the “conventional” system of ignition to maintain its position.
