Alkaline decomposition of alkali sensitive flooring materials - effect of concrete surface structure

  • 1. (SINTEF Building and Infrastructure)

Description

When resilient flooring is glued directly to a concrete surface there is a possibility that water based, acrylate flooring adhesives will undergo alkaline decomposition. Alkaline decomposition of alkali sensitive flooring adhesives is usually associated with high relative humidity in the concrete. There are some indications however, based on damages observed in the field, that the finishing technique used on the concrete floor and the method by which the flooring is bonded to the substrate may create an environment that increases the risk of alkaline decomposition. This study uses a 24 factorial design to investigate the influence of troweling technique (steel troweling vs. rotary power troweling), bonding technique (wet vs. dry bonding), relative humidity in the concrete and concrete water-cement ratio on the aggressiveness of concrete towards materials that are sensitive to alkaline moisture. This paper will present the experimental setup and preliminary results.
